Had a great time at the Baseball Reliquary event last Saturday.  I purchased the book “Strrr-ike!! Emmett Ashford, Major League Umpire” by Adrienne Cherie Ashford, daughter of Emmett.   I checked out two  books from the library, one on the Negro League and the other is  “A Strong Right Arm”  the story of Mamie “Peanut” Johnson.”

I also won another book.  “Bat Boy: My True Life Adventures Coming of Age with the New York Yankees by Matthew McGough.  Matthew was in the audience so he signed my book.  He was there with his two beautiful young kids.  Even though I have the book I will attend the Baseball Reliquary when he will be speaking about his book and having a book signing.   My friend Abby who is a huge Yankee fan, said is a fun read.   Thank you Abby for the two Dodger books you have sent me!   Let me know if there is anything I can send your way.

I plan on getting the Gaylord Perry book too.  So many books to read, so little time.  I plan on reading on my way to Camelback Ranch.

1981 World Series Program.

I was checking the scoresheet from my 1981 World Series program.  Fernando Valenzuela pitched that game!  it was game three at Dodger Stadium.

I had Jaime Jarrin sign it.

The program cost me $3 back  then.

The final score was Dodgers 5, Yankees 4.   I always note the attendance in my scoresheets.  That day It was 56,236.   .

The 1981 Yankees.  Note the ‘staches and hair.

The 1981 Dodgers.  Dave Stewart is here.  He is now Matt Kemp’s agent.

The 1981 NL All-Stars.  I miss the Expos and the Pirates unis.   Very colorful picture.  i counted six Dodgers and only one Giant (Vida Blue).

I can’t believe next year it will be 30th anniversary of that World Series.   It was a nice trip down memory lane.

Dodgers Lose, Dodgers Win. Check out this MLB All-Star FanFest Special!

   Torre.jpg

I did not want to blog after the Dodgers lost that heartbreaker in the 9th to the Yankees.   We all left the stadium so demoralized

Hey Torre:  Did you fall asleep in the 9th?

But we won last night against the hated ones on my birthday!!   YEAH!!

Young John Ely goes tonight against Cain.  Let’s see what this game brings us.   Truebluewill was reminding me of the Dodgers record against the NL West!  19-5!    We swept the Padres earlier in the year so yeah let’s play the NL West!

MLB All-Star FanFest  Special courtesy of Pepsi!

MLB Fan-Fest Special from Pepsi.jpgI went to the Vons and noticed this special last Sunday.   Checkout the voucher!

If you spend $20 in qualifying Pepsi products, you can earn two free tickets to the MLB All-Star FanFest.    The tickets cost $30 each so this is a pretty good deal.   Thanks Pepsi!

I don’t care for Pepsi, but I bought products made by Pepsi like Gatorade and Aquafina water If they don’t call me to volunteer for the Fan-Fest, then I already have a voucher for tickets.

Woohoo!!  I just got the email that says “Congratulations!’  You have been accepted to the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star  FanFest Volunteer Team!

Dodgers Win! Furcal Web Gem! I met Jane Heller!

When we were down 3-0 in the first inning, I was saying”Oh boy here we go again, having a bad first inning.”   but the boys came back and Kuroda-san settle down.   Kuo was NASTY!  Was that really a 98 MPH fastball he threw?!?!

The game ended with a great play by Furcal.  It was the #1 Webgem for Saturday:

Let me say this again,  “(insert team) suck” has to be the most immature, stupid chant I’ve ever heard.   You don’t hear it with the regular season ticket holders around me and I imagine with true Dodger fans and Baseball fans.    I also don’t boo great players.

On his birthday, Derek Jeter struckout three times.  Kuroda, Kuo and Broxton struck him out.  Joe Torre was quoted as saying “Well, it was my present to him”

Earlier in the day, Joe Torre and Derek Jeter had gone to the John Wooden public memorial at the the UCLA Pauley Pavilion.

Did  I say that Kuo has been NASTY lately.  This guy has gone thru so many T.J. operations and is basically an out away from ending his career but he keeps on pitching!   My Dodger hat off to you Kuo!

And my boy James Loney drove in four runs!  Here is Loney with my friend Erik who is celebrating his birthday today.  Happy birthday Erik!  May the Dodgers bring us a win!

I finally got to meet the famous Jane Heller!     Too bad I just spent a little time with her.   I also got to meet her husband and LadyJane who posts in  Jane Heller’s blog.   Wish I would have gotten a second chance to take the pic as this came out a little blurry and to spend more time with you and your husband Jane.

A battle of lefties for the rubber matchup today:  The tough Veteran Andy Pettitte against 22 year old Kershaw.   Kershaw needs to control those walks.  He has given up 48 walks, the most in the NL and the Yankees lead the Majors in OBP.

With Fox doing the game yesterday and today ESPN,  I MISS VIN SCULLY!

Oh I forgot to mention that after his running, Padilla came over to the rail in the left field side and signed alot for fans in that side then the center field side.   Quite a few Yankee fans were there too getting his autograph.  I and many congratulated him on his outing the day before.  He signed my scorebook.    I asked him in Spanish who he was rooting for in the World Cup after USA was already out.  He looked at me, smiled and said “Is going to be tough but I am rooting for Mexico.

LET’S GO DODGERS!

LET’S GO MEXICO

Dodgers Yankees series.

I know I’ve been a little down with the Dodgers getting swept at Boston and that running blunders of game two against the Angels but we won last night in big fashion 10 -6!!   woohoo!

And tonight my boys in blue are back at OLOCR _Our Lady of Chavez Ravine that is Dodger Stadium, our Blue Heaven on Earth!

The LA Times has two wonderful pictures in the sport section:  One of  Joe DiMaggio with  Mickey Mantle and the other of our pair of aces, Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale.  the title?  World Class.  check out the article hereWorld Class  Love this pic:

The matchup for tonight’s game is:

CC Sabathia  against Vicente Padilla.

Remember that homerun CC Sabathia hit at Dodger Stadium during that interleague game in  when  he was with Cleveland?     We were both at the game in 2008 but could not remember who he hit the HR off of?   Guess who?

Chan Ho Park!  I am sure CC is looking forward to swinging the bat again.

Padilla:   Make sure we don’t see this:

Image: Sabathia

 I want to see this:

I am thinking “Maybe Sandy Koufax would be in attendance!

It got to be a little weird for Joe Torre seeing the Yankees in town.   BTW, Torre and Jeff:  When am I getting my baseball?    Last time I received a text from Jeff from the Safe at Home Foundation, he said he had my baseball signed by Joe and Koufax in a safe place.

Let’s go Dodgers Let’s Go!

Vin Scully:  We Love you!!

Get well Dave Roberts. Congrats to DeWitt and Andre Ethier

Best wishes to Dave Roberts who is being treated for lymphoma. Roberts was diagnosed in mid-March and he says the cancer was detected early. He says the prognosis is “good.” He has undergone two rounds of chemotherapy so far.

Roberts played center field in Los Angeles from 2002-04. The former UCLA Bruin hit .262 with 273 hits and 164 runs for the Dodgers. He totaled 118 stolen bases, ranking third in the National League with 45 in 2002 and 40 in 2003.

I still remember this matchup with the Yankees a few years back at Dodger Stadium when Dave Roberts  doubled and sped all the way home when Matsui misplayed the ball in left field for a two-base error, giving the Dodgers a 5-3 lead in the bottom half. The ball bounced past Matsui on the rubber warning track and he chased it down near the Dodgers’ bullpen.

“I was thinking two. I saw the ball get by him and at that point, I was thinking four,” Roberts said. “There was a lot of silence when I was running and then an eruption when I got to home plate.”

That was exciting watching Roberts get all the way home on that double and error play.   I was at that three game series against the Yankees.  I will be there come June for all three games.

Get well Roberts!

A big congratulations to Blake DeWitt for going 4 for 4 yesterday and Andre Ethier for belting two homeruns!

Los Cerveceros (Brewers) de Milwaukee will be at Dodger Stadium starting tomorrow.

Go Dodgers!

Fantasy baseball update:  Los Locos Azules are in second place in their division.  Did I mention that Andre also plays for the Locos Azules?

Go Dodgers!

A Trivia, 1950 and World Series

I was counting how many current Phillies played for the Dodgers.  I counted six, can you name them?  Actually, Sue of

Rants, Raves and Random Thoughts counted eight!  wow!

My friend LTD23 was reminding me of this incident:

In Spring Training of 2005, Jayson Werth was hit on the wrist by an A.Burnett pitch and although the wrist was broken, he came back to play 102 games.  His numbers suffered considerably and after the year he was diagnosed with two torn ligaments in the wrist, causing him to miss the entire 2005 season.

Around this time I like to go back and read or re-read about World Series of the past so I took out this large coffee table book from the library.

The first World Series was played in 1903 when the Pittsburgh Pirates played against the Boston Americans.  Boston won that series 5 games to 3.

Did you know that in 1904, there was no game because the New York Giants thought that their team was too good to play anyone?   They considered the American League a minor league!

In World Series games, the Yankees have swept the opposition EIGHT times!    wow!   The teams that the Yankees have swept are the Cubs (2x), the Cardinals, the Reds, the Atlanta Braves, the Pirates and the Padres.

Yankees have been swept THREE times by the L.A. Dodgers, NY Giants, and the Reds.

The Phillies and the Yankees have only met once in a World Series.   That happened in 1950 when the Yankees swept the Phillies.    That year, the Phillies won the N.L. pennant on the last day of the season.   In the top of the 10th inning, with two on and one out, in a 1-1 tied, Dick Sisler hit a walk-off homerun against Brooklyn Dodger Don Newcombe  to clinch the first N.L. pennant in 35 years.  Robins Roberts, the starter for the Phillies, who had lead off the 10th with a single,  held the lead in the bottom of the inning and the Philadelphia Phillies were National League champions for the first time since 1915.

The World Series started three days later.   Roberts, who pitched three times in the last five days of the regular season, was unavailable for a Game 1 start.  Although the Phillies were swept, the series was close as three of the games were lost by one run.   The only two homeruns in the series were by Joe Dimaggio and Yogi Berra.

Now let’s see what history is made in the 2009 World Series.  This time the Phillies are well rested.  Let the games begin!

Pirates, Magic Numbers, Yankees, Red Sox and Tigers, Oh My!

A free grilled Dodger Dog, hanging out with friends at Dodger Stadium and a Dodger WIN!  What could be better!

Dodgers won the opener with the Pirates 6-2!

Magic number is now 14.  I always think of a Dodger player when I look at number so here is one of my favorite Dodgers back when:

Today is Blanket night!   This is what it looks like

Today is Honduras Independence Day!  Some of you might know that I was born in Hondura.s

Today is also Nicaragua Independence Day!   Happy Independence  to Nicaraguan Vicente Padilla.

Tomorrow is Mexico Indepedence Day!   It is also a day game at Dodger Stadium with Manny’s bbh.

Happy Independence to Mexico and to all my Mexican friends and friends that have Mexican heritage.

Happy Independence to Fernando Valenzuela, Pepe Yniquez, Juan Castro and also to Andre Ethier because of his Mexican heritage.

I’ll leave you with this video from Andre Ethier’s Carne Asada day.   It has Mexican music and Andre says a few things about his Mexican heritage.

Oh My!  there so many cool videos there.  Andre! You got me hungry with the one at L.A. Live!   That macaroni with trufles and three kind of cheeses sounds outstanding.

Super exited about the 2010 MLB schedule!    Dodgers get the Yankees at Dodger Stadium and they get to go to Fenway Park.   This is how the interleague schedule looks like

3 vs DET: May 21-23
3 in ANA: June 11-13
3 vs. ANA: June 22-24
3 in BOS: June 18-20
3 vs. NYA: June 25-27

I smelled a road trip to Fenway!   I need work to send to New Hampshire during that week in June and then I can stay in Boston for the Dodger series!

How I became a Dodger and Baseball fan. My first post!

My name is Emma. I was born in Honduras and came to the LA when I was 13. No one in my family followed baseball so my first boyfriend introduced me to the game when I was 20 (long time ago) . He took me to my first game and I remember that he would listen to Vin Scully on the radio. I did not pay much attention as I would argue with him that Football was better than baseball. He would explain baseball to me and I would explain Football. I was a big Ram Fan then. He was born in Maine so his baseball team was the Red Sox but he was also a fan of the Dodgers.

After we went our separate ways, I started attending some games with a very nice older Jewish lady from Brooklyn that used to talk about Sandy Koufax. I started getting into the game more and more.

The last games of 1980 had left me elated and devastated when The Dodgers pushed for an extra playoff game with the Astros. that was an incredible last 3 games of the season in 1980 where one game would have eliminated the Dodgers but they kept fighting back. I remember Bud Furillo playing “Another one Bites the Dust” on Dodger Talk.

Dodgers won in incredible fashion Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After it was official that the Dodgers had won Sunday’s game, I got in line to buy a ticket for the extra playoff game on Monday.

I remember I made sure to show up at working very early that Monday. I walked into my boss’s office to tell him I was only working half a day. His response was “I am surprise you are even here.”
Monday’s game was such a letdown with a lot of second guessing Lasorda. He should have used Fernando in that game! I sat in my car for quite a while all depressed. When I went home I did not want anyone talking to me.
But that November in 1980,  I decided to purchase a season ticket. I remember they took me to see a Loge seat (aisle 103 N 3) and that became my seat for 1981 and 1982.

What a year 1981 was with the start of Fernandomaniaand culminating with the Dodgers beating the Yankees in the World Series!!

I had the season ticket for one more year and afterwards I still attended games but not so much as I wanted to go back to school. I started attending less and less games until I would only watch some on TV or just playoffs. Things like free agency, strikes started turning me off. I have a gap of many years that I’ve been catching up. Back in 2000 this guy from work had 3 extra tickets to a game and he invited me along with two other women from work, then someone else invited me to another game and before long my addiction, my love for the Dodgers & baseball was back in full force :-)
