Magic Johnson, Dodgers, Vin Scully, Sandy Koufax, & Jackie Robinson Legacy

The LA Times Sport section has an article this morning titled “Icon to Icon”   by Steve Dilbeck.  This brought a smile to my face knowing that Magic Johnson reached out to Vin Scully.  Quoting article “It was interesting,” Scully said.  “When the phone rang and I picked it up, I recognized that voice.  And, as I told him “If  it’s possible, I can hear your smile.”   Johnson tweeted on Thursday “Last night I reached out to Vin Scully & acted like an excited little kid speaking to the LA Icon.”

Future team president Stan Kasten also called Vin Scully.   The next day Magic also tweeted this “Just spoke to legend & HOF Sandy Koufax.  Thank you so mch fo taking the time to share some of your vast baseball knowledge.”   IF I was part of a team buying the Dodgers, those two would have been on my list to call.

Look at this cake that Magic Johnson posted on hisWhoSay page  on thursday 3/29/2012  saying “Thank you to AEG, Staples Center & the Lakers for this incredible Dodgers cake they made for me,” Magic Johnson

More good news as reported by Bill Shaikin of the LA Times:

Johnson has reached out to Rachel Robinson, the widow of Jackie Robinson. He has invited her to take an active role with the Dodgers’ new ownership group, a person familiar with the discussions said Friday. The details of how Rachel Robinson — and the Jackie Robinson Foundation — would be involved with the Dodgers remain under discussion, the person said.

This is a quick post as I am getting ready to go to Ventura.  I am meeting with friends  for a Girls night out.  We are staying Saturday night and coming back Sunday.  These are some of my non-baseball friends, well with one of them I used to have a Dodger mini package in the field level for two years.  In fact, after we stopped having the mini package and I started having season tickets, I would always invite her for Opening Day.  Last two years she has not been able to to go.  Anyway, they are understanding that once baseball starts I am not available.  I tell them “look at a Dodger schedule to see if I am available”  Even then, I might be on a road trip.   The last time they invited me to a get together for “Poker night” back in January, it happened to be the Saturday for “National SABR Day”   Looking forward to this trip and then get ready for the road trip to San Diego for the four game series!

Nomar Garciaparra (5) days till Dodgers Opening Day in San Diego!

Ron Cey(10) days till Opening Day at Dodger Stadium!

Dodgers Select a Seat Open House and SABR Day.

Checking back at the Dodger Open House last year http://crzblue.mlblogs.com/2011/01/27/dodgers-select-a-seat-open-house-and-sabr-day/ it coincided with SABR Day.  This year again Dodgers Open House coincides with SABR day (Saturday 1/28/2012)  so why not have it at Dodger Stadium?

The Dodgers annual Select a Seat, an event for season ticket holders,  started Thursday 1/26/2012  and it will conclude with the Open House on Saturday 1/28/2012.   It is our first chance to have a Dodger dog at the stadium.  Don’t they just taste better at the Stadium.   The Dodgers sent us this picture of the sunrise at Dodger Stadium:

Although I was not feeling well, It was great seeing my Dodger fan friends there like William (Deuce’s dad), Dee, Sylvia and Jeanine to name a few.    Also Darryl and Leslie who recently became season ticket holders.  Jeanine and I met Darryl at the SABR Fall AFL conference.  Darryl said that we convinced him to get season tickets.  Welcome to the Dodger fan family Darryl & Leslie.   Other friends like Lorena, Rosie and Rene will go to tomorrow.  Will miss them.

SABR Day Saturday 1/28/2012.  I was going to the SABR website at http://sabr.org/ when I ran into this picture!  haha, that is me chatting with yes, SABR members, the most knowledgeable baseball fans.  Down below in a Tiger hat is Max, another very knowledgeable fan.

If you can make it go SABR Day.  There are many locations that are hosting SABR Day from Washington to Vermont to Toronto, to Puerto Rico.  For more information go to  http://sabr.org/sabrday:

SABR Day is an annual event that brings together SABR members and friends on the same day, regardless of where they live. The third annual SABR Day will be held on January 28, 2012. Regional SABR meetings are open to all baseball fans — though we encourage you to join SABR if you like what you find — and are usually free to attend. Guest speakers often include current and former baseball players, managers, umpires, executives, scouts, writers and authors.

In Seattle, SABR Day will be held in conjuction with the Mariners FanFest.  In Minneapolis, the chapter will participate with the TwinsFest.    in Arizona it will be at Tempe Diablo Stadium, in New York at the New York Public library.   Check the site for more information.  I counted 39 locations.

Looking forward to the event at La Habra library.  I have never been to this library and I love visiting new libraries!   From SABR:

Former Milwaukee Braves All-Star catcher Del Crandall will be joining us for SABR Day at the La Habra Library. High school coach Eddie Alvarez will speak and Eric Dearborn will present photographs of final games at various ballparks. Authors Daryl Grigsby (“Celebrating Ourselves: African-Americans and the Promise of Baseball”) and Ron Selter (on .400 hitters) will also speak.

(note to me:  grr…second time Ido this post as I lost my original post).

Dodgers get some Gold and the McCourts are Out of Here! Woohoo!

What a great day in Los Angeles for us Dodger Fans!  First we get the news that Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier win  Gold Gloves!  Congratulations guys!

The next news I received yesterday was that Frank McCourt agreed to sell the Dodgers!

 Dodger fans are celebrating everywhere!

I am off to the SABR AFL conference in Arizona early tomorrow morning!  details here http://sabr.org/latest/exciting-schedule-deck-sabr-arizona-fall-league-conference  I am excited about attending and also to see Dustin Pedroia there.  Maybe Ethier will also be there….

Love what John Thorn has to say about SABR here http://sabr.org/content/john-thorn-why-im-sabr-member  That is the way I felt when I attended my first SABR convention this year.  John just says so well.  I was thrilled to meet him this year.  Take a look at this  baseball card from John Thorn.  I got the set of Major League Writers from Terry Cannon of the Baseball Reliquary:

Greg Jezewski Exhibition and the Baseball Reliquary

A Giant fan and a Dodger fan can get along

People ask me all the time “Emma, what do you do when the baseball season is over?” or “What do you now that the Dodgers are not playing?”  I tell them there is still baseball being played in the Fall League and there are baseball related events going on.  For example I went to SABR (Society for American Baseball Research) meeting on Saturday October 1st.  We had Wes Parker as our speaker.   Afterwards a new president was elected and at the end we had a baseball books auction.

Saturday October 8, 2011, Thanks to the Baseball Reliquary, I found out about Greg Jezewski ”High Ball” exhibition in Santa Monica.  Take a look at this piece.  I understand that Lasorda has not seen it

You see Greg is a Giant fan.  He was sporting a Seals jersey at his exhibition.   What he doesn’t know is that  God IS a Dodger fan.   Tommy always talks about the BIG Dodger in the sky.  But despise Greg being a Giant fan, he has a nice baseball-themed kinetic sculptures and multi-media paintings at the exhibition in Santa Monica at Frank Pictures Gallery at Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica.

Here is the link to the  gallery website and photos of the work in display http://frankpicturesgallery.com/artists/GregJ/gregj.html  Check it out, is on display until November 10th.    I had a wonderful time there looking at the exhibition and talking to Greg and Terry & Mary Cannon.    Terry is the Executive Director of the Baseball Reliquary.   I had so much fun talking to Terry & Mary.

The next Baseball Reliquary event I am attending  is this coming Saturday October 15, 2011 at the La Pintoresca Branch library, 1355 N. Raymond ave., Pasadena.  The  ”Mexican American Baseball in Los Angeles,”  book signing and film screening is taking place  from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.  The event is held in conjunction with the 13th Annual Latino Heritage parade and jamaica.  I can’t wait for the event and I can’t wait to finally meet Richard Santillan co-author of the book.   Richard and I have talked to each other on the phone and have emailed each other.   Looking forward to meeting him and his wife.    BTW, Richard is a Dodger fan and a season ticket holder.   I am also looking forward to meeting some of the players from that era like Armando Perez.   Here is a link to the event:

Short Video telling Vin Scully “Thank you!” and “We Love you!”

What  a great day it was Friday night when Vin Scully announced that he is coming back next year for his 63rd year with the Dodgers! At the time of the announcement the Dodgers were losing 1-0. Next inning the Dodgers like if they knew, stared hitting.
.
Dodgers score 6 runs in the 7th with Matt Kemp launching his 30th home run to join Raul Mondesi as the only members of the 30-30 club.  Matt Kemp  now has 31 stolen bases.
.
After the game I just had to go tell Vin Scully thank you for making the decision to come back for one more season. We Dodger fans are blessed to have Vin Scully with us for 62+ years.   Here is the short video that my friend Lorena taped:

Thank you Lorena!

Here is another video telling Vin we Love him.

Well I am off to Dodger Stadium early today as I am a volunteer for SABR today to recruit new members.   Come stop by in the Reserved section.

Wes Parker 2nd video from SABR41

Ok, so it took me a while to upload and release the second video I taped of Wes Paker at SABR41 but here it is.  Wes talks about McCourt, Dodgers, World Series, Sandy Koufax, Drysdale and Clemente among other things.

Wes Parker Video at SABR 41 in Long Beach, CA

Greetings everyone!   I have not been able to load my pictures from my trip to Minnesota & also from the SABR41 convention.  But I have this video of Wes Parker when we caught him outside one of the sessions.    I love Wes Parker’s   love for the game.

I had such a great time at the convention.   Everyone was so nice and friendly.   Love the fangraph group, loved talking to lots of people there.   I bought some great books.   I love the volunteering, going to the tour of old baseball ballparks in LA.   Never knew that there was a ballpark in Vernon so close to where the Farmer John company is.   Loved listening to Rob Neyer, Dennis Gilbert, Al Ferrara, Tommy Davis,  Francisco Balderrama, oh just everyone!

Loved going back to Dodger Stadium with the group & going to my first trip to see the Storms against the Visalia Rawhides.  Did you know that  the Rawhides is locally-owned and operated by Tom and his cousin, Kevin O’Malley?   Tom’s grandfather was the legendary Walter O’Malley.

SABR41 was a great experience and I made some  wonderful friends like Abby& Kent in this picture:

I need to go to Minnesota next year where SABR42 will be held.   Also SABR43 will be in Philadelphia!

Enjoy the video

Don’t Miss the Big One!

Don’t miss the big what?  The 41st Annual Convention 2011!   This time is in Southern California.  July 6th to July 10.

There is plenty to do at the convention in Long Beach!  Check out the presenters and the convention activities at http://sabr.org.

This will be my first time attending a SABR convention.  I really wanted to go last year to Atlanta but I could not work it out into my schedule.  But this time being so close to home, I am there!

I am also looking forward to meeting more members of SABR and going to the Dodger game on Friday night and the Angel game on Saturday.   Also the tour of historical Southern California ballparks sites, including Wrigley Field, The Los Angeles Coliseum, Gilmore Field, Washington Park and the Vernon ballpark.

I am not sure if I can make it to see the Visalia Rawhide at Lake Elsinore.  I never been there.   Did you know that Tom and his cousin Kevin O’Malley own the team?   Tom’s grandfather was the legendary Walter O’Malley,

Check it out!  Don’t miss the big one!   The price is very reasonable, more so if you are a member.

Dodgers Select A Seat, Open House and SABR Day

Later on this morning is my Select A Seat appointment at Dodger Stadium.    Is my first time to taste a Dodger dog for 2011 and see the Dodger friends that I have not seen since the season ended.

I would have gone to Saturday’s Dodger Stadium Open House but I am already committed to the SABR Day on Saturday.

From the SABR link below:

SABR Day 2011 takes place on Saturday, January 29. The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is a member-driven nonprofit organization made up of nearly 7,000 members who are fans of baseball and its rich and varied history. Although a sizable portion (about 10%) of the membership comes together for SABR’s national convention each year, with 55 chapters scattered through the US (as well as Canada, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, and Japan), it would impossible to gather the entire SABR community in one place at one time. Our alternative solution is to have as many members as possible come together on the same day–regardless of where they live. On our first SABR Day in 2010, more than 700 SABR members from 37 chapters got together at 34 separate meetings across North America.

Below is a list of chapter and chartered community events already scheduled for SABR Day 2011. Be sure to check back often as more chapters finalize their plans. Whether or not you’re a member of SABR, you’re invited to attend a SABR Day 2011 event and be a part of a community of dedicated fans of the greatest game around.

The one in Boston is at Fenway Park and a couple of them at the MLB team Fanfest.  Wish the one in the LA area was at Dodger Stadium but is at Ervine, CA.

Scott Boras at the SABR 2011 Conference and the Winter Meetings

SABR (Society for American Baseball Research) 2011 Conference.

The 2011 SABR conference (#41) will be in Long Beach, California next year! the dates are July 6 to 10, 2011.

I went my first SABR meeting last Saturday with the purpose of volunteering . There were 15 guys at the meeting and me.

Anyway, I found out that Scott Boras will be one of the speakers Also Arte Moreno for the Angels and THE speaker from the Dodgers is still pending. The player speakers will be announced at a later date.

The Dodgers and Angels are in town so the Dodger game that we will be attending from the conference will be Thursday July 7th when the Dodgers play the Mets.   This is also Andre Ethier Bobblehead night so It will be a popular night.  The Angel game will be on Saturday against the Mariners.  There will be much more added to the conference.  In the meantime,

Hot Stove and Winter Meetings

Don’t you just love all the Hot Stove trade rumors coming out of the 2010 Winter Meetings?  My head spins on one direction then another with all the rumors.   Are the Dodgers going after a left fielder or Prince Fielder?

In the meantime the Dodgers have signed Vicente Padilla for 2 Million.   I like this signing at this price.  Padilla must like it here in LA.

Note also that SABR will be at booth #1907 during the Baseball Trade Show at the Winter Meetings, December 6-8.

The McCourt divorce.

And just to make things more …..interesting for the Dodgers, the judge has ruled in favor of Jaime McCourt so she owns 50% of the team.      These two have not played nice since the divorce started so what now?    Do we move into appeal hell now?  Does she get her office back?  Do they sell the team?  What does Selig have to say?  Stay tune for more of   “As The Dodgers turns”
