Congratulations to Clayton Kershaw: 2013 Cy Young Award Winner

Remember back in March of this year when Clayton Kershaw was on the cover of Sports illustrated this year?

some fans thought it would be bad luck.  I remember back in March hunting down for the magazine.  Some had a different cover but I found copies in Northridge for myself, Lorena and Rosie.  Well it was not bad luck for Kershaw to be on the cover.   With a record of 16-9, and an ERA of 1.83, he won the National League Cy Young Award.  Congratulations Mr. Sunshine.

When Kershaw won the award in 2011, he had a record of 21-5 with an ERA of 2.28.  After the announcement in 2011, the Dodgers invited Season Ticket holders to join in the celebration on the field.  I had taken the train to work but when I got the email, I borrowed the work company car and I went to the event.  What a fun day at the stadium that was!  Don Newcombe & Fernando Valenzuela were also there.

Only Sandy Koufax and Kershaw have won more than one Cy Young award with the Dodgers.   Sandy did it in 1963, 1965 & 1966.

The first recipient of the Cy Young award was Don Newcombe in 1956.  For the first eleven years (1956 – 1966) only one winner from Major League Baseball was selected.

Don Newcombe

Don Newcombe went 27-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 1956 to capture the Cy Young

I have been very busy that I have not updated my blog lately.  I hope to get back on track.   I may not be posting as often but I am always thinking Blue and following any baseball news.  I am currently reading the book “It Pays to Steal”  by Mauy Wills.

I drove to work Monday because the traffic was going to be lighter on Veterans Day and because I had made an appointment to cut my hair and color it.   Since I was going to be there a little longer than just getting a haircut, I took the book with me.   Well, I forgot the book there.  I had rented the book from the Los Angeles Central library.  I had to drive the following day (I usually take the train to work)  to go pick up the book.

On my way home I was thinking… They don’t know I am a big Dodger fan and a baseball fan.   I don’t think they follow the game. What did they think when they read the book title  “It Pays to Steal.”    I  know I had the bookmark  on chapter 9 “Formula for success”…. Maybe when I go back I will ask Carmen what they thought when they read the title.

Dodger Stadium: The Happiest Place on Earth, The Magic Castle

Vin Scully has called Dodger Stadium, the Magic Castle. That is what it was on Wednesday, The Magic Castle, The happiest place on Earth.

Greinke loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs but for some reason, I was not nervous. Greinke got out of it with no runs scored by the Cardinals. Greinke ended up giving up two runs in the third but that was all in his seven innings of game 5 of the NLCS. The bearded one, Brian Wilson was lights out in his 8th. Kenley Jansen in the 9th gave ME palpitations. The Cardinals scored two more runs but Kenley got out of it. Dodgers had four homeruns in the game: Adrian Gonzales off Kelly, Crawford off Kelly, A.J. Ellis off Mojica and Adrian with his second one off Oxford. Final score: Dodgers 6, Cardinals 4.

After game 3 on Monday, Waingwright said that Adrian’s celebratory gestures were Mickey Mouse. I wore my Dodgers Mickey Mouse ears for game 4 and 5. I lost track of how many fans asked me “Where did you get the Mickey Mouse ears?” They wore selling them back in 2010 at Disneyland when the MLB All-Star game was in Anaheim. My friend Greg and Linda who have yearly passes wore able to get them for me back then.

After Adrian’s first homer-run he did this:

Adrian was asked about it afterwards and he said he was just having fun.  when he hit his 2nd home-run, he was all business.   Adrian likes Mikey Mouse!  Anyone remember when he came from Boston to the Dodgers? He was wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt.

Adrian Gonzalez with his Mickey Mouse t-shirt when he came to the Dodgers from Boston.  In the picture, HOF Jaime Jarrin and Pepe Yniguez, Spanish broadcasters for the Dodgers.

We were all having fun with Waingwright’s comment  and that is the reason I wore my Mickey Mouse ears.

My friend Greg also wore his for Tuesday’s game

Photo: They've both been offered big bucks for the ears.

Ok, enough Mickey Mouse stuff.  haha.  OK, one more picture that Hector Becerra of the LA Times took when he snuck in behind me.

Several people at work approached the following day “Were you wearing Mickey Mouse ears at the game?”   “I saw you on TV”

Yep that is me!  It is a good thing I asked for a day vacation instead of “calling in sick”  As it was I was in a little trouble at work for forgetting about a meeting on Wednesday but hey!  my vacation day got approved.

OK so the Dodgers are back in St Louis for game 6.  Clayton Kershaw against Michael Macha.  Game time at 5:30  Let’s go Dodgers!

Let’s give Kershaw some run support

Dodgers and the Dream Center

Saturday August 31, I went to the Dream Center in Los Angeles. The Dream Center is a Pentecostal Christian Church mission located at 2301 Bellevue Avenue in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

IMG_0025
The Founders are Pastor Tommy Barnett, Pastor Matthew Barnett & Pastor Caroline Barnett

From the Dreamcenter.org website:

Founded in 1994, The Dream Center is a volunteer driven organization that finds and fills the needs of over 50,000 individuals and families each month.

We do this through mobile hunger relief and medical programs, residential rehabilitation programs for teens and adults, a shelter for victims of human trafficking, transitional housing for homeless families, foster care intervention programs, job skills training, life skills counseling, basic education, Bible studies and more. We work to meet people where they are at, to bring them hope and a way off the streets.

We’re also equipping others to serve. The Dream Center’s record of success has attracted urban missionaries and Christian leaders from across the U.S. and the world. As they volunteer with us, they gain insight and skills that they can take back to their own communities.

In this way, more than 100 independent Dream Centers have been launched nationally, as well as internationally. Many more churches and ministries have become more effective as we teach those who give their time and talent to do what we do. Many who once needed our services also go on to help others.

My friend Amanda who volunteers for the Dream Center has invited me several times,    She started going back when Josh Lindblom was with the Dodgers.   This time she told me that  there was going to be a private kids baseball clinic conducted by some Dodgers.   I went with my brother Victor and we stayed in the background taking some pictures.

Ross Porter back at Dodger Stadium and Dodgers at Colorado

Ross Porter will be at Dodger Stadium this weekend! I read it on Tom Hoffard column here: http://www.dailybulletin.com/ci_23359256/tom-hoffarth-media-ross-porter-returns-dodger-stadium

From the article:

The 74-year-old has stayed busy on various broadcasting projects and finds himself returning to the stadium today as an employee of Fox Sports West. Executive producer Tom Feuer hired him to call today’s CIF Southern Section Division III title game between Mira Costa and Serra (2 p.m.) as well as the Division II championship between Cypress and Temecula Valley (5 p.m.), both of which will stream on the FoxSportsWest.com Prep Zone online platform

Ross Porter, Vin Scully and Gerry Doggett

I would love it if he would return working for the Dodgers.

In the meantime, the Dodgers are in Colorado after dropping the two games at Anaheim Stadium. I made the trip to Anaheim for the two games. I drove for the first game and took the Metrolink special train the second night. I do recommend taking the train. It is $7 round trip. The train back from the stadium leaves 30 minutes after the last out.

Tonight is El Niño de Oro Clayton Kershaw against Garland. Game at 5:40 p.m. Pacific Time.

MLB Postseason: Another Quadruple Header

Sunday I was planning on going to the San Clemente Seafest but after seeing that there was going to be an MLB Postseason  quadruple header on TV, I decided to stay home.   I am glad I did stay home to watch most of the four game series.   Yeah, I vegetated  but in between I did get some cooking done..  I’ll take the train ride to San Clemente another weekend.

Today there is another quadruple header!   I am at work but I will work with my headphones on while I listen to some of the local announcers on MLB At Bat.  I tend to switch between the home and away team announcers.   I have found them a little too homers.  That is something that you don’t find with Vin Scully, Jaime Jarrin and Pepe Yniguez.

When I find myself on the road and my MLB At Bat fails me at the stadium, I turn to my radio and listen to the local announcers.   In addition to enjoying the game, I like to listen to the local commercials to see who their local sponsors are.   I found the milk commercials at Minnesota …wholesome :-).  By the way, avocados from Mexico  commercials in the MLB Postseason?   Cool!   It did make me want some avocado .  Talking about avocados, last weekend was the Avocado festival in Carpinteria, CA.

this reminds me of the avocado trees back home in Honduras.  It also reminded me of Duke Snider who had an avocado farm in Fallbrook, CA.

The quadruple header for today:

St Louis at WAS 10 AM PT (1 PM ET)  on MLBNetwork.  Carpenter against Edwin Jackson.

SF at  CIN  1 PM PT (4 PM ET)  on TBS  Barry  Zito against Mike Leake

BAL at NY  4:30 PM PT (7:30 PM ET)  on TBS on ESPN radio   Miguel Gonzalez against Kuroda-san.

DET at OAK   6:30 PM PT (9:30 PM ET)  on TNT  Mike Scherzer against AJ Griffin

Ex-Dodgers in the postseason:  Kuroda-san, Jonathan Broxton, Guilleromo Mota, Edwin Jackson, Derek Lowe,  Jayson Werth, Russell Martin, Jim Thome, Jim Johnson, Xavier Paul, Dioner Navarro and David Ross (Braves)

photo of San Clemente: California-Blog.com.  Vin and Jaime from my calendar, third photo: : Bob Carey, Los Angeles Times, Avocado pic from coop.foodnotes.com

p.s.  Jaime Jarrin twitted this  “commendable drive of Clayton Kershaw to intensify the collection of funds to help kids in Zambia.  He will have a golf tournament on November 12th in Los Angeles.

I like the quotes once you publish your post here at the MLB Blogs.  This is from today:

Dodger Rubber game at San Pancho. Happy Perfecto Anniversary Sandy Koufax. Crisis! Kershaw scratched

Happy 47th  Perfecto Anniversary to Sandy Koufax!

Today September 9, 2012 is the 47th anniversary of Sandy Koufax Perfect game at Dodger Stadium against the Cubs.

Happy anniversary to Sandy and the Dodgers!

Dodger Rubber game at San Pancho

Great win and much needed by the boys in Blue yesterday.    I go thru so many emotions with this team from frustration to relief  that they tied the series.    I called San Francisco Pancho because that is one of the nicknames for the name Francisco.  Another nickname is Chico, that is what they used to call my grandfather on my mother’s side.  Chico Giants sounds like an oximoron as chico means small.  So Rubber game at San Pancho.

Two lefties to the mound:  Clayton Kershaw (12-8 2.79)  against Barry Zito (10-8, 4.51)  I hope Kershaw gets better run support.

OH NO!   PANIC!   CRISIS!  Clayton Kershaw has been scratched!

Does that baseball Rubber ducky stress reliever work????

Good luck Kerhsaw

And good luck Joe Blanton! May the Dodgers give you some runs

OK, like my friend Rosie said, at least is not Kershaw’s arm.  Dylan Hernandez just posted that Kershaw is scheduled to pitch at Arizona.  I feel a little better.

Let’s Go Blanton!  Let’s go Dodgers!
