ThinkCure. The Think Blue sign has been replaced with Think Cure, a yearly tradition in preparating for the Think Cure radiothon and Telethon.
There are some cool auction items there like a chance to shag fly balls during BP, meet Vin Scully, have an Italian dinner with Tommy, take a batting lesson with Don Mattingly. a baseball signed by Koufax, lots of players signed jerseys and many more items. Peter Tilden of KABC said 100% of the proceeds go to the the ThinkCure foundation.
World Cup. The world Cup started today! Two tvs were installed in the cafeteria so we could watch the games, especially Mexico against SouthAfrica today. The game ended up in a tied 1-1.
Here are some co-workers after the first game.
Here are my Honduras and USA jerseys:
Honduras plays Chile on Wednesday at 4:30 AM! I’ll be up watching the game before I head to work! or I can go to the restaurant Rincon Chileno. They will open at 4;30 and serve breakfast from Chile and Honduras.
This weekend is also the Dodgers Angels series. Billinsgley goes against Pineiro. Originally this series was supposed to be at Angel Stadium but because of a concert, the Angels asked the Dodgers to switch series so we got the weekend series! At the end the concert with U2 got cancelled.
Saturday and Sunday, the Dodgers are sending rookies. John Ely will face Scott Kazmir on Saturday and on Sunday Carlos Monasterios will face Jerred Weaver.
My Christmas tree and the Christmas stockings are still hung. See, my grandmother’s tradition was to not remove the Christmas tree until after January 6th. That is the day that the Three Wise Men arrived to see Jesus. Well, I started the tradition of opening the Christmas stockins on January 6th.a few years back. In part it was because I still had my Christmas tree up. One of my Christmas stockings is a Dodger Christmas stocking.
In some parts of Mexico and some other Latin American countries, they open their presents on Dia de los Reyes. the presents are put inside the kid’s shoes left under the bed. Prior to the day the kids write their letter to the Three Wise Men. In Mexico City, they attach the letter to a helium baloon. Some kids even leave water and hay for the camels that carry the three Wise Men.
On this day also you can also eat the “Rosca de Reyes” which is a wreath made of sweet bread with yeast,, dry fruit, anise and cinammon. . Inside the rosca, you will find a little baby doll. It represents baby Jesus but whoever gets the little baby has to host a party on February 2nd _Candle day.
tiny plastic baby Jesus figure are concealed in the dough, symbolizing the hiding of the infant Jesus from King Herod’s troops.
Here is a picture of a rosca de reyes. .
Rest in peace Rory Markas. Rory was a local boy, born here in Chatsworth where I work. He went to Chatsworth High, LA Valley College and Cal State Northridge. When I saw that he lived in Palmdale, I was Palmdale? that is about 90 miles to Anaheim.
Rory Markas spent 8 seasons with the Angels. Markas also did broadcasts for the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Clippers, USC men’s basketball and Pacific Coast League baseball.
In late 2008, Markas underwent surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain on Nov 1, 2008. I found this quote he made last year prior to calling the Angels first playoff game:
“Yesterday I happened to turn on the radio and Vin [Scully] was doing the early innings of the Dodger game, When I heard his voice I said, ‘God, what a treasure this guy has been my whole life.’ I just appreciated what he’s doing, the standard he sets and hope I can do that just a little. I think I get a little more sentimental these days.”
Rest in peace Rory.

Update: Jane & Canuk! Thank you so much!! I got it to work!
The boys are back in town! the boys are back in town! My beloved Dodgers are playing the Angels for one game and then Milwaukee will be in town for Friday and Saturday then they fly to San Francisco for one exhibition game! What is up with that? We used to play the Angels for a 3 game Freeway series rotating two games at one stadium and one at the other stadium. . For those of you that might not know is called the Freeway Series since you can get to both stadiums traveling down the #5 freeway. Oh and from SF they go to SD for the Opener there!
I got my blue on today and I am leaving at 3:30 so I’ll catch the Amtrak to Union Station. With my Metrolink monthly pass I can take Amtrak so long as is from the same station to station that shows in my Metrolink pass. I hope this agreement between Amtrak & Metrolink does not change. I wish that like last year we had the Trolley taking us from Union Station to Dodger Stadium but no so is back to walk from Union Station to Cesar Chavez (Sunset) to Broadway, hop on the #2 or #4 bus, get off at Sunset & Aines and huff & puff hiking up to the stadium. Oh well, maybe I’ll lose a couple of pounds.
Is a little chilly here with a light chance of rain in the forecast but I don’t think it will get as chilly as it got for one of the WBC games.
In the meantime my friend and I have booked our air flight to Chicago to go see our boys play there in May! Neither one of us have been to Wrigley Field before so we are so looking forward to our trip. We still need to book hotel and get tickets. We welcome tips! Oh! we are also going to San Diego for the home opener against our boys! It should be fun, fun fun!!!
Woohoo! Honduras beat Mexico in the Concacaf soccer match last night!
