Weekly Photo Challenge: Endurance

This week’s WordPress photo challenge is Endurance. http://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_photo_challenge/endurance/

I started scanning the pictures in my iphone to see what I could use.  I came across a picture and a little video I took of an oldtimer Dodger fan  with a very old Dodger baseball cap.   I heard him talking with an usher about his hat  so I asked if I could take a picture.

hat old

His name is Paul.   I caught him just before the elevator in the Top Deck of Dodger Stadium came.    I knew I had a short window to do a quick little video.

Dave got the hat on August 31, 1959.  This is the second year the Dodgers played at the Coliseum. He says in the Video that Sandy Koufax piched that day against the Giants. He had gone with his future father in law. At that time, the lady with him was his girlfriend. They were to marry the following week.

Dave could not remember who pitched for the Giants but I looked it up. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/LAN/LAN195908310.shtml
Jack Sanford pitched for the Giants. The Dodgers with Sandy Koufax on the mound won the game 5-2.

Dave did remember that Wally Moon hit one of his famous moonshots. Dave also remembers Willie McCovey hitting a homerun off Koufax.

Some endurance that LA Dodgers hat has withstood! The hat is 55 years old and he still wears to Dodger Stadium.

Dave’s hat, marraige and his his love lasting 55 years years and still going.

Matt Kemp 9/5/14 Homerun ball

Our friend Javier Gonzalez ended up with the homerun ball that Matt Kemp hit into the bullpen.  D’Back catcher caught it and gave it to Javier who has his season ticketsimage

In the field level section 52 row 8. That was Kemp’s 18th homerun this season.  The homerun came inthe 3rd inning off Nuno.  Haren won his 12th game. Credit Jansen with his 40th save, a good thing after Kenley had blown away the save on Wednesday day game.

Congratulations Javier!  Hope Matt signs the baseball.

Game Tankas 09/02/14 Dodgers 4, Nationals 1

I have done haikus in the past but did not know about Tankas.  Haikus are a three-line poem of 5/7/5 syllables.   Tankas have two additional lines of 7 syllables so they are 5/7/5/7/7.   I was reading the WordPress Monday writing challenge for this week to write a tanka or a set of tankas https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_writing_challenge/full-tanka/

Here it is what I came up with during Clayton Kershaw masterpiece performance yesterday at Dodger Dodger Stadium.
WASHINGTON NATIONALS AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Kershaw on the mound
Pederson playing center
Good omen this night
First Major League hit for Joc
A single in the second!

WASHINGTON NATIONALS AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Kershaw can hit too
With a single in the fifth
Daring base running
after a single by Dee
broke open the scoreless game

WASHINGTON NATIONALS AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Home-run Uribe!
With Crawford on base Woo-Hoo!
score four to zero
but in the fifth Bryce homered
Only run Kershaw allowed

Kershaw 8 innings
3 hits, 1 earned run allowed
2 walks, 8 strikeouts
Kershaw wins his 17
ERA 1.7

Rene Cardenas interviews Dodger Catcher Mike Scioscia in Spanish

I love this old  interview!  Long time Spanish broadcaster Rene Cardenas interviews Mike Scioscia in Spanish.   I love hearing Mike talk in Spanish.   Mike Scioscia used to be one of my favorite players.  I loved how he blocked the plate.   I used to sit behind homeplate in the Loge level.   There was an older lady sitting behind me that like me, used to go to the games by herself.   Whenever she was not at the game because she also had tickets to the Lakers, I used to buy her ticket so that I could take one of my little cousins to the game.

I did not know how well Mike speaks Spanish.   Unlike now, back then I only used to listen to the games in English.

Here is the interview:

Baseball Reliquary 2014 Induction Day pictures

If you are a baseball fan, I highly recommend you to join the Baseball Reliquary.   The annual fees are $25.  Go to http://www.baseballreliquary.org for more information.

Like many Baseball Reliquarian members I look forward to the yearly Induction Day.   Here are some of the pictures I took Sunday 7/20/14:

Reliquary executive director Terry Cannon getting things started.  Too bad I missed taking a picture with the annual cowbells ringing.  everyone is encouraged to bring a cowbell to join  the ringing.

First award:  The Hilda Award

Jerry Pritikin, also known as Bleacher preacher, the 2014 Recipient of the Hilda Award.

The Tony Salin award is giving to individuals for their commitment to the preservation of baseball history.  Jerry Cohen founded Ebbets Field Flannels received the award.

Photo

the keynote address was  delivered by Joseph L. Price, a professor of religious studies at Whittier College whom  has taught courses and published numerous essays on the subject of sports and  religion.

Joseph L. Price sings the national anthem at Louisville Slugger Field

John SchulianDizzy Dean

Writer and historian John Schulian did a wonderful presentation of Dizzy Dean. Nephew Sandy Dean could not attend due to a good baseball reason so Terry Cannon accepted the award.

Dodger Historian waiting his turn to talk about Don Zimmer and present the award to Jean “Zoot” Zimmer.

Mark Langill shared some stories about Don Zimmer from 1958 at the Coliseum.  He also found in Don Zimmer an invitation to Don and Zoot Simmer when they got married during a minor league game.  The “invitation” was provided you had a ticket to the game

Zoot Zimmer.

Peter Dreier, the Dr. E.P. Clapp Distinguished Professor of Politics at Occidental College, introduced the induction of Rachel Robinson, which was accepted by her sister-in-law, Delano Robinson.

From Dr. Peter Dreier “Rachel was a real pioneer. In 1940, only five percent of all women – and less than two percent of black women – earned a college degree. But Rachel wasn’t about to let those odds get in her way.”

After earning her master’s degree, Rachel worked as a nurse-therapist and researcher at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

Delano Robinson, sister-in-law of Jackie Robinson. wife of Olympian Mack Robinson accepting the award for Rachel Robinson.

From Peter Dreier speech:  “

Rachel was hired as a riveter at the Lockheed Aircraft factory in LA, where they made airplanes for the war effort. She worked the night shift, drove to UCLA at dawn, changed clothes in the parking lot, and then went to class.

To encourage women to take factory jobs during the war, the federal government created an iconic figure – “Rosie the Riveter” – whose image adorned this famous poster.

But if America hadn’t been such a racist and segregated society back then, perhaps the government would have selected another woman to represent the nation’s female workers – “Rachel the Riveter”.”

Afterwards a large group of us went to dinner.

The 2014 and 2013 Recipients of the Hilda Award.

Like every year I had a wonderful time at the Baseball Reliquary Induction Day.  Looking forward to next year Induction Day but before that to receiving our ballot in the mail

Baseball Reliquary: Induction Day 2014

Today is the day of the Baseball Reliquary Hope of the Eternals Induction Day!  I am heading that way soon!

“Bleacher Preacher” Jerry Pritikin who is flying from Chicago will receive the Hilda Award

Pritikin on Harry Caray's 10th Inning show, 1985.Jerry Pritikin has said that "the everyday fan here in Chicago has turned into an endangered species! For 25 years, I became part of the lore of the fabled fans in the cheap seats of the bleachers at the 'Friendly Confines.' However, there are no more cheap seats. In 1991, I boycotted Wrigley when they raised the price of a bleacher seat from 4 to 6 bucks. Today you almost have to file for bankruptcy at the price printed on the ticket ($75 for a kid or adult on a Saturday)."

Bleacher Preacher

Jerry Cohen, recipient of the 2014 Tony Salin Memorial Award, presented annually by the Baseball Reliquary.

The recipient of the 2014 Salin Award is Jerry Cohen, who founded Ebbets Field Flannels in 1988, a Seattle, Washington-based company which manufactures historically-inspired athletic apparel, ranging from handmade reproductions of vintage flannel baseball jerseys to T-shirts, baseball caps, and even grounds crew jackets and sweatshirts, all made with a high level of craftsmanship and respect for authenticity.
