Should Women remove their non-baseball hat during the National Anthem?

Update 4/22/12:  Michelle Michell posted in my FB page:

The Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem

In 2007, the U.S. Congress addressed etiquette for the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem in 36 USC 301. When saying the pledge of allegiance, citizens of all ages should stand at attention, face the flag, and salute by placing the right hand over the heart. Men should remove their hats, and women any sports caps.

Certainly women at ballgames are not wearing “dress hats” like the one you have pictured above as much as they did 30/40 years ago. If a women is wearing a hat at a game it’s most likely just a baseball cap, but I still believe in the old hat etiquette and would not expect a women to take her hat off.

I believe Women should remove their hats. Its the respectful thing to do. I use to live on a Military Base (Still go to them.) And everytime they play the National Anthem at 5 Everyone stops in respect to the Nation we live in. I believe it’s only respectful for Everyone to do it and not just gentlemen. It’s my biggest Pet Peeve more than anything to see people Not take their hat off as well as Screaming to a player ortelling to represent the team during a Moment where we come together as a Nation for those few minutes.

Thank you Russel, I have learned a few things doing this post with responses here and on Facebook. There is a link that someone posted there that I will post here.

Matt,
I respect your opinion. I feel that I still respect the flag and our nation (I became a US Citizen when I was like 30) even if I have a hat on but if it offends anyone, I take it off.

I think it’s up to the individual, as tradition states a woman should not remove her hat, but I myself always choose to remove my hat. I feel that the rule that women don’t need to remove their hats is an old fashioned one dating back to an era when there were rigid seperate sets of rules for men and women governing dress, ettiquette and social interactions that set aside a completely seperate unequal place in society for women. For me, in the modern era where we occupy the same places in society, I think the same ettiquette should apply to both men and women, so I remove my hat during the National Anthem…that said, when I observe women who choose to keep their hats on, I respect their choice and do not think they are being disrespectful or un-feminist, I think they just prefer to keep their hat on. :)

The law is the law.

Well said Kristen.

Prior to this post, I did not know that U.S. Congress had addressed this.
