‘ITwas the Night Before Opening Day

‘Twas the night before Opening Day, when all through the park
not a creature was stirring, not even a lark
The bats were hung by the helmets with care,
In hopes that the Dodgers soon would be there
The fans were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of a parade danced in their heads;

While Lorena had tweeted that she was loading the MLB At Bat App
I settled down to take a short nap
When out on the field there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to Petco Park we flew like a flash,
Drove up I-5 almost near crashed.
The MLB Bloggers were blogging like there was no tomorrow
While Padre fans drank Coronas; drowning their sorrows,
When, my wondering eyes saw the mound and the bases
It was Clayton Kershaw, the CY Young of 2011 aces,

With a smooth young coach acting so calmly
I knew in a moment it must have been Mattingly.

More rapid than the Eagles his courses they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now Kemp! now, Ethier! now, Dee Gordon and Loney!
On, Javy, on Jansen! and hopefully Billingsley!

Can’t wait till Thursday; Opening Day is the reason
“Good luck to my Dodgers and to the fans a great-season.”

Very nice Emma! Happy Opening Day!

Brilliant Emma, as always! Congrats on winning the seaosn opener. Clayton Kershaw is tough as nails to pitch the way he did feeling so bad. He reminds me a lot of Hershiser – a sweet, young looking kid…right up until he takes the mound, then watch out. :)

Thanks. Brian! It will be colder by game time tonight. Our poor Kershaw was sick but he gave us some innings. At one point in the dugout it looked like he was going to puke.

Kristen,
Thanks! Yeah, Kershaw does remind me of Bulldog Hershiser. A guy in my row had a Hershiser jersey with the 1988 patch!
Good luck on your opener.

I’m just glad the Dodgers have Kershaw. I don’t think he really cares about the Cy Young to be hoenst. I don’t know Kershaw personally, but he’s a pretty laid back guy on camera and doesn’t seem to envision himself without an amount of humility. The Dodgers see that and know that if he stays healthy, that kind of attitude leads to consistency.I’m willing to bet he’d trade two Cy Youngs for better defense and a couple more solid bullpen arms for the next two years.1 day of pride can’t compete with 162 days and nights on the road and back. Awards are nice, but winning day in and day out is much more pleasurable and the feeling is mutual for the whole community.

Hope you had a good time at the game. Too bad Kershaw was sick, he looked good on the mound, but maybe Mattingly should have gone with someone else instead of wasting his first start. I’m looking forward to reading your review of the trip.

Emma, I got very excited when I saw you on TV both Saturday and Sunday. You brought our boys good luck. I especially liked the big blue floppy hat you wore on Sunday.

Russel,
Mattingly begged him not to start but Kershaw insisted. I heard he threw up after the third inning when he had to come out. Poor thing but he is a gamer.

Will!
Long time no hear from you. I got excited being at the game and I am excited for tomorrow. Not sure if I can sleep. LOL on the hat. I had forgotten my hat when I went to Spring Training for St Patrick weekend so I bought that one in AZ
