The LA Times Sport section has an article this morning titled “Icon to Icon” by Steve Dilbeck. This brought a smile to my face knowing that Magic Johnson reached out to Vin Scully. Quoting article “It was interesting,” Scully said. “When the phone rang and I picked it up, I recognized that voice. And, as I told him “If it’s possible, I can hear your smile.” Johnson tweeted on Thursday “Last night I reached out to Vin Scully & acted like an excited little kid speaking to the LA Icon.”
Future team president Stan Kasten also called Vin Scully. The next day Magic also tweeted this “Just spoke to legend & HOF Sandy Koufax. Thank you so mch fo taking the time to share some of your vast baseball knowledge.” IF I was part of a team buying the Dodgers, those two would have been on my list to call.
Look at this cake that Magic Johnson posted on hisWhoSay page on thursday 3/29/2012 saying “Thank you to AEG, Staples Center & the Lakers for this incredible Dodgers cake they made for me,”
More good news as reported by Bill Shaikin of the LA Times:
Johnson has reached out to Rachel Robinson, the widow of Jackie Robinson. He has invited her to take an active role with the Dodgers’ new ownership group, a person familiar with the discussions said Friday. The details of how Rachel Robinson — and the Jackie Robinson Foundation — would be involved with the Dodgers remain under discussion, the person said.
This is a quick post as I am getting ready to go to Ventura. I am meeting with friends for a Girls night out. We are staying Saturday night and coming back Sunday. These are some of my non-baseball friends, well with one of them I used to have a Dodger mini package in the field level for two years. In fact, after we stopped having the mini package and I started having season tickets, I would always invite her for Opening Day. Last two years she has not been able to to go. Anyway, they are understanding that once baseball starts I am not available. I tell them “look at a Dodger schedule to see if I am available” Even then, I might be on a road trip. The last time they invited me to a get together for “Poker night” back in January, it happened to be the Saturday for “National SABR Day” Looking forward to this trip and then get ready for the road trip to San Diego for the four game series!
Nomar Garciaparra (5) days till Dodgers Opening Day in San Diego!
Ron Cey(10) days till Opening Day at Dodger Stadium!
Pepe Yñiguez is part of the Dodgers Spanish broadcasters. He is entering his 14th year with the Dodgers. He has also hosted “Central Deportiva”, a werkly sports talk show on KWKW. He has also broadcasted many events for Fox Sports International including the 1997-2005 World Series. He has also broadcasted the 1997 MLB All Star Game and the Caribeean Series. In addition, from 1993-1995 he also served as the Spanish radio broadcaster for the Los Angeles Raiders.
Recently Pepe Yñiguez was telecasting Dodger games in Spanish along with Manny Mota on cable. Because of the increase in Spanish telecasts this year, Jaime Jarrin’s son, Jorge will be covering those games with Manny Mota.
Yñiguez will continue to broadcast games on the radio KTNQ with Hall of Famer Jaime Jarrin and commentator Fernando Valenzuela.
Pepe is very knowledgeable in the game of baseball. In Pepe’s voice you can hear the passion that he has for the game. His golden voice captures the audience. Recently during Spring Training, my friend Lorena and I spent some time talking baseball with Pepe. As is often the case when I get together with Terry Cannon of the Baseball Reliquary & Steve Seemayer, we lost track of time talking our favorite subjects: Baseball & The Dodgers.
May you have a beautiful day Pepe. May you have a great season. May you soon get a chance to transmit a no-hitter and also may the Dodgers soon win a World Series so that you would have the pleasure of transmitting such great games. You share a birthday with Cy Young

I heard Vin Scully refer to Dodger Stadium as the Magic Castle! Well, the Magic Castle just got some extra magic! Is Magic Time at our beloved OLOCR _Our Lady of Chavez Ravine!
The official notice from the Dodgers was titled “The Los Angeles Dodgers and Frank McCourt Announce Agreement with Guggenheim Baseball Management“
As reported by http://mikesciosciastragicillness.com/ ” Mark Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners, is the new controlling owner, and the group includes film producer Peter Guber, baseball Stan Kasten, and Bobby Patton & Todd Boehly of Guggenheim. Magic’s the public face, Kasten’s the baseball guy, and Walter is the controlling interest. It may not seem like an important distinction, but it is, though it’s fair to note that Walter is not expected to be a hands-on owner in the Steinbrenner or Cuban tradition.”
Earvin “Magic” Johnson stated, “I am thrilled to be part of the historic Dodger franchise and intend to build on the fantastic foundation laid by Frank McCourt as we drive the Dodgers back to the front page of the sports section in our wonderful community of Los Angeles.”
We are thrilled to have you be part of the Dodgers, Magic! All I can say is
Jeanie Buss tweet to Magic Johnson: Congratulations Magic-sign me up for season tickets!
Just wish Frank McCourt was complete gone.
10 days till Dodgers Opening Day at Petco Park! Also 10 days till I take vacation! Yes! I will be in San Diego for the four game series. The Dodger schedule works perfect with a four game series, followed by a day off on Monday then Opening Day at Dodger Stadium so Clayton Kershaw gets to pitch both Opening Days!
10 days. Hall of Famers that wore # 10 and they have had their number retired are : Sparky Anderson, Phil Rizzuto, Andre Dawson & Ron Santo.
I was listening to Jaime Jarrin and Pepe Yniguez broadcasting the Dodger game on Sunday. It was odd that there was no English transmission. Anyway, Pepe mentioned that Ron Santo never saw a no hitter. Pepe also mentioned that he has never seen a no-hitter. Neither have I. I have seen them on TV but never in person.
As I was going thru the retired numbers per team, I noticed that Seattle and Colorado are the only teams that have never retired a number. Both teams have numbers out of circulations like #24 Ken Griffey Jr. and #14 Lou Piniella. For The Rockies, no one has worn Larry Walker’s #33, but probably #17 Todd Helton will be the first number retired for the Rockies.
P.S. After a year in hiatus, I am back to playing Fantasy baseball! So my team, Los Locos Azules are back!! I drafted last but I am happy with my team. Here is what I have:
C Carlos Santana, 1B Joey Votto, 2B Howie Kendrick, 3B Aramis Ramirez, SS Dee Gordon, OF Jacoby Ellsbury, OF Emilio Bonifacio, PF Yoenis Cespedes, Util Alex Rios, Util Adam Dunn, BN Ryan Howard, BN Paul Goldschmidt, BN Jason Bay, BN Chase Utley. SP Zach Greinke, SP James Shields, RP Craig Kimbrel , RP Heith Bell, P Brandom Morrow, P Kenley Jansen, P Francisco Liriano, P Brandom McCarthy, BN Jonathan Broxton.
Here is a short video I shot of Tommy Lasorda dressed in his batting practice jersey giving instructions to the minor leaguers on how to hit. “You got an ax in your hand” “you are chopping the tree down” “como esta la republica?”
Tommy is so funny

Clayton Kershaw turns 24 today! Happy birthday Kershaw!
Here is Kershaw with Sandy Koufax this year. I had already posted this picture but I can look at it every day! Picture from Jon SooHoo. Take a look at his blog with his terrific Dodger pictures at http://dodgersphotog.mlblogs.com/ Jon came in at #12 in the February MLB Blog Pro blog but Giant photographer blog came in at #2 so keep going to Jon’s blog on a daily basis and give him credit if you post his pictures.
Today is also Father’s day in Honduras so I dedicate this post to my papito Pedro. He passed away in 2005 on June 29th, a day after my birthday. Miss you dad! Wish I would have spent more time with you. Still remember that day as a 13 year old kid leaving Honduras and crying like a baby when I had to say goodbye to you. Happy times when I went back to Honduras to see you even when you were sick.
portrait of mom and dad. Mom died when I was two, sad I don’t remember her.
I dedicate this song to you papi. “Ese que me dio vida” “That one that gave me life” de Alejandro Saenz.
Here are some lyrics:
Con tu sonrisa de medio lao cuántos te quiero te habras callao.
Con tu eterno cigarrillo Con tu ojera y tu descuido La más bella de las danzas Es tu cojera al caminar….
How many “I love you” you must have quiet down…..With your eternal cigarette, with your dark eye shadows and your carelessness The most beautiful dance is your limp as you walk…
Happy Father’s Day to all that celebrate today and happy birthday to my cousin Mina.
Note: I found my phone. the poor thing slept the night under the car rental at the hotel in Arizona. Good thing it was the night before it rained. Forgot my camera between New Hampshire airport, taxi and hotel. Was found at airport so need to make a trip there to pick it up. When I described the bag (a little Victoria Secret bag) the guy said “Oh yeah, we have it” Crazy trip from CA to AZ for Spring Training games with friends Lorena & Elisa, then flight delayed in Phoenix. 80 of us were making connection flights in Philadelphia. Guy next to me was going to Manchester, England and I to Manchester, NH. The other lady was on her way to Israel. Fun times in AZ and now working here in NH this week.
Happy ST Patrick Day everyone! We are in Arizona. Going to the first game at Talking Stick for the Dodger game against Colorado. Then is back to Camelback Ranch for the game against the hated Jints. I am wearing my green jersey. Lost my phone. So fricking mad at myself but “que se la hacer” what can you do? I’ll just try to enjoy the rest of trip.
St Patrick video with Kershaw, Mattingly, Kemp, Loney, Ethier
Matt Kemp’s days till Opening Day at Dodger Stadium & Clayton Kershaw’s day till Opening Day at Petco Park
Our Double K of trouble for the opposition! There are Matt Kemp (27) days till the Dodgers Opening Day at Dodger Stadium
and Clayton Kershaw (22) days till Opening Day at Petco Park
WOOHOOO!!! Can’t wait. In the meantime I went to see UCLA play USC at Dodger Stadium last night. Here are the 2012 pocket schedules we picked last night at Dodger Stadium.
Look at the upcoming promotion for Mother’s Day! An Andre Ethier bag
I had a great time sitting with Dee, Kevin, Ernest & Arturo. Arturo in the USC sweatshirt. Kevin is the one behind the green hat & Ernest with his Dodger hat.
Before I head back to CamelbackRanch this weekend, I wanted to post more pictures from my first trip so here they are:
The seven of us with Manny Mota. Too bad the kid taking the picture did not get us all in the picture. Good thing Rosie had another picture.
Sneaking in with Tommy Lasorda. Tommy had signed a ball for me back in 2010 but the ink was getting lighter (no, I did not originally use a blue pen) so he signed it again. He also signed my Mark Langill book. He started looking at the pictures in the book commenting about the rookies of the year on the opposite page where he signed. Thanks Tommy! Love you!
Everyone stopped to watch Kershaw pitch in the intersquad game.
Kershaw had a good outing.
It was time for us to head out but before that we spotted Pepe Yniguez with Bill DeLury. Mr. DeLury has been with the Dodgers since 1950, mostly as Traveling Secretary. He started with the Dodgers as a 17-year- old office boy. Evan of Opinion of Kingman’s Performance did a wonderful job in interviewing Mr. DeLury. Here is the link http://opinionofkingmansperformance.blogspot.com/2011/06/second-longest-tenured-dodger-employee.html
Lorena with Pepe Yniguez. Pepe has been broadcasting Dodger games en Espanol since 1999.
Pepe also teams up with Manny Mota calling some games on TV on Time Warner cable channel 858
Javy Guerra got a kick of Rosie bringing the Rookie Hazing picture of Javy dressed as a Taco.
Javy when he saw me that I sporting my Javy batting practice jersey, he turned me around to show another player and said “See? she is my number ONE fan!”
I was playing photographer. Here is Priscy with Javy
Here is Amanda with Javy
Here is Tony Jackson, Beat Writer for ESPN Los Angeles. I like his long hair.
Taking a well deserved rest before we go inside Margaritaville
After food and drinks we headed next door to Saddle Ranch for some tequila shots and to ride the mechanical bull
The bull kicks Rene
Priscy is next
She gets knocked out but she gets back on the bull
She is having a bull, I mean a ball lol
Nice going Desiree! Even falling, you fall with grace.
Time to head back to LA. I am going going back to Cali Cali…..
Next Trip: Leaving Thursday night with Lorena and her niece Elisa. Lorena will be driving. They will drive back to Cali. I on the other hand need to head to NH to work there the following week so I will miss Sunday’s game as my flight leaves at noon. I can’t wait for Thursday night!
When Lorena and I found out that there was going to be a Spring Traning Fanfest 3/3/12, we said “Let’s go!” Rosie, who we met on Twitter last year said “I want to go!” The original plan was to go for the day. We already had a Spring Training road trip planned for the St Patrick weekend so we thought a turnaround trip would be OK.
On Saturday 2/25 I get a text from Lorena that Amanda was joining. A few days later Lorena tells us her friend Priscila is also joining us. Our group had grown to FIVE.
After thinking it over, we thought the original plan was kinda crazy to drive from LA to AZ and come back the same night so we changed it stay Saturday night.
The buz at Camelback Ranch the day before we were to leave was that Sandy Koufax was there! Dodger fans were giddy with excitment.
Kershaw, Sandy Koufax and Don Mattingly. Picture taken by Jon SooHoo.
Because of Sandy Koufax was at Camelback Ranch, our group grew to seven a few hours before we were scheduled to take off. Needless to say some of us hardly got any sleep or none at all.
The minivan arrived at my house about 2 AM. A few minutes later Rosie was dropped off at my house. Because of a mixup, Rosie did not bring anything but her purse. She thought we had changed back to making the trip a turnaround trip. She wanted to stay but we said “There is a Target, close by…. “ So off we went six women and a men in a Blue Minivan.
We arrived safely and it was off to taking pictures. The first one I took was with Gaylord Perry
The second one was with Javy!
Here is Rene and I talking with Jon SooHoo
This picture taken by Dodger main photographer Jon SooHoo, appeared in the Dodgers Photo Gallery. Thanks Jon! . Check out his MLB blog at http://dodgersphotog.mlblogs.com
With Manny Mota on his bicycle
Plenty of pictures were taking especially at Sattle Ranch where 3 of the group rode the mechanical bull but I’ll leave the pictures for another post or maybe I should check with the group if is OK to post.
I had a wonderful time on this trip. Can’t wait to be back at Camelback Ranch for St Patrick weekend. The only thing is I won’t be able to watch the game on Sunday as I am scheduled to work in NH the following week so I am taking a flight at noon.
