Third base has been very very cold to the Dodgers
Jon Weisman of ESPN posted in his blog Dodger Thought This:
Last time the Dodgers won a Gold Glove at the following positions:
C – Russell Martin, 2007
1B – Steve Garvey, 1977
2B – Orlando Hudson, 2009
SS – Cesar Izturis, 2004
3B – None
OF – Matt Kemp, 2009
OF – Steve Finley, 2004
OF – Raul Mondesi, 1997
P – Greg Maddux, 2008
Third Base, none!!?? I went back to look at all the NL Gold glove winners
1957 Frank Malzone Red Sox (AL)
1958 – 1961 Ken Boyer Cardinals.
1962 Jim Davenport Giants
1963 Ken Boyer Cardinals
1964 – 1968 Ron Santo Cubs
1969 Clete Boyer Atlanta Braves
1970 – 1974 Doug Rader Houston Astros
1975 Ken Reitz Cardinals
1976 – 1984 Mike Schmidt. Phillies. Too bad for Ron Cey.
1985 Tim Wallach Expos
1986 Mike Schmidt Phillies
1987 Terry Pendleton Cardinals
1988 Tim Wallach Expos
1989 Terry Pendleton Cardinals
1990 Tim Wallach Expos
1991 Matt Williams Giants
1992 Terry Pendleton Cardinals
1993 Matt Williams Giants
1994 Terry Pendleton Cardinals
1995 -1997 Ken Caminiti Padres
1998 Scott Rollen Phillies
1999 Robyn Ventura Mets
2000 – 2001 Scott Rollen Phillies
2002 Scott Rollen Phillies/Cardinals
2003-2004 Scott Rollen Cardinals
2005 Mike Lowell Marlins
2006 Scott Rollen Cardinals
2007 – 2008 David Wright Mets
2009 Brian Zimmerman Nationals
2010 Scott Rollen Reds
If Mike Schmidt had not cornered the 3rd base corner for 10 years, Ron Cey might have had a chance. Also had Adrian Beltre not abandoned the Dodgers, he would have had a good chance of getting that first gold glove with the Dodgers. I know…IF. That hot corner has been very cold to the Dodgers.
Also, It has been 36 years since the last time a Dodger won a GG at first when Steve Garvey won it last. Although James Loney is a good defensive 1st baseman, he got heavy competition with With Jeff’s boy (Pujols) and Adrian Gonzales.
BTW, Gil Hodges was the first 1st base Gold Gloves (Both Leagues) in 1957. He went on to have another in 58 and 59. Wes Parker had six gold gloves at first (1967 – 1972) and Garvey with four (1974-1977)
So that is 13 gold gloves for the Dodgers at First and none at Third.
Hey Emma!
It’s been WAY too long since I came to your blog last! Sorry. And I looked back at your old posts and saw the one when you mentioned my name! Yes I know, that was almost a month ago. But seriously, you never cease to amaze me! You are such a sweet gal; I’m just thrilled to call you my friend! Things have been EXTREMELY hectic here lately. No, still nothing solid on a job, but still very busy nonetheless.
And the Dodgers have never had a gold glove at 3B? Well, Ronny did have Mr. Schmidt to compete with. I seem to remember that Mr. Schmidt was pretty good at 3B! And Adrian, well, I remember him making a lot of great plays that not many people would get, but he would also mess up on his fair share of routine plays.
And it must suck to have to pay 50% more for your seats after a dismal season like 2010 and the ownership cr** we have to endure…
Emma: OMG that’s so weird. I kind of thought A-Rod should’ve won it in the AL…then my whole infield would’ve been Golden! Oh well…

Hey Carol!
I am thrilled to call YOU my friend! I am glad that the during the baseball offseason is when I get busier at work. I hope your business starts up. Do you send up flyer?
Yeah Mike Schmidt had what? 10 gold gloves? He was great at third. I go to see him playing.
,
Regarding my tickets, I’ll pay them, but I’ll pay until the last available day.
.
WOW Virginia! Lots of gold with your boys!
Sounds like it’s time for the Dodgers to get a Gold Glove caliber third baseman! That’s a very long drought without one so I hope it happens.

Pretty hard to believe, after all these years, but I guess the Dodgers still have things to prove to the baseball community, eh?

Jane,
I would love to see someone at third base flashing that leather.
.
Jeff,
Yep, hard to believe. Not in Brooklyn, not in LA.
.
Jenn,
that darn Schmidty! but I did love to watch him play.
Wow..Nice to finally see something worth reading..lol..Not to say that there is nothing else, but this is something worth noting..Not like Dodgers.com..Very trivial in their articles..But I digress..
Once again Ms. Emma, very insightful with your writing, as to I have been frequenting your blog lately to see what other tidbits of info I can learn on that particular day..
🙂
I am honestly much much much younger than the time’s of Garvey or Scmidht, etc., but they were the gutsiest players ever to take the field..They gave it their all, broke bones and weren’t afraid to bleed on their jersey..The good days of baseball..
However, it doesn’t quite surprise me as much as it should, that the Dodgers do not have a GG winner at 3B..
My best hope for that would of been La Roche or Dewitt, but that dream went away like a puff of smoke in the open air..The mere thought that on that list you provided are atleast 6 players who at one point or another wore Dodger blue, is mind boggling..
Hopefully, and with all due respect, our minor league system has been and is in the process of writing this wrong, by developing better 3B..I have my eyes on Pedro Baez of course, and hopefully, we see him sometime soon..
As to the season ticket prices increasing, its incredible how much it is..My payment is coming out to $1071 for 2 seats..It was only like $633 last season, and the giveaways are what really jerk me around..Half price food days, 1981 shirt giveaway, Fernandomania Bobblehead, Mattingly..I mean, its supposed to be lower food prices everyday, but for Mc Court, its a promotion..lol..simply pathetic..The bobbleheads, and shirt must be the ones from 1981, they just went to the basement and dusted them off because McCourt needs to bring LA back to a time when winning was a constant..lol..
Can’t wait to see your next post Emma..Keep up the excellent work.

I am not sure nowadays the winning of the awards is what it was, afterall at least 4 players i dont think should have been even considered this year, especially the NL 3rd base winner, but there is still plenty of Dodger ball left for them to have a player that wins the 3rd base GG…

Thanks for a great post Younghitter89!
I’ve been so busy that I have not had time to blog some more. I am lucky that my busiest time at work is during the baseball off-season.
I am much much older than you so I did see Cey and Garvey. I loved seeing the Penquin at third! I can still picture him diving for balls and like you said they were not afraid to dirty that uni.
.
Yeah is mind boggling to find at least six ex-Dodgers playing third elsewhere getting gold gloves. I too had high hopes for La Roche. Of the group that played with him (Kemp, Russell, Loney), I thought La Roche would have done as well or better.
.
Too many silly giveaways like in the minor league. I rather get a discount in my tickets .
.
Well, glad you came by. You are a nice writer so keep on blogging! We need us Dodger fans to represent here.
Peter,
We are going on 53 years and counting.
.
You and me Randy! Sure was a pleasure seeing th epenguin at third diving for balls and he had the pop too! I see him at Dodger Stadium since he still works for the Dodger communitiy. And yeah, don’t have problem with Schmidt. He was great to see with the glove and the bat. that power he had at his wrists!
Emma, though in the back of my mind I found it criminal that the Penguin never got a Golden Glove – we have to reign ourselves to the fact that we witnessed the benchmark on that corner for 10 of those Golden Rawlings. I have no problem with Mike Schmidt. I have a problem when I can name other NL third basemen worth 99% of Schmitty’s salt from 1975 to 1990.
If there is one Dodger I enjoyed watching at the Stadium during my youth – it’s Ron Cey!

I’m trying to find advice on how you can increase the amount of responses without any help blog site, exactly how have you flourish in carrying this out%3
one year ron had less errors than mike but lost out to him with the gold glove ….go figure
