Fan Appreciation, Traditions and the Postseason

Fan Appreciation Day came and went so now is preparation to the Postseason but first I’d like to write about two traditions that were carried over on Sunday during Fan Appreciation Day.

The first tradition:   Robyn and Chuck have been season ticket holders in the Top Deck for a few years now.   They started a tradition of bringing a cake or two in appreciation of all the Dodger employees in the Top Deck, the elevator and any other employee that we come into contact during the season.   chuck and Robyn start cutting the cake during the 3rd innings and thanking each employee that shows up.  slices of cakes are also shared with other fellow season ticket holders and if there is any leftover, with other fans in the area.

Take a look at the cakes below.   The first one reads “Thank you Dodger Stadium Employees.”  the second one reads “Western Division Champs.”

The second tradition is one that Yankee fans are familiar with.

Joe Torre has a tradition of letting a player manage the last game of the year if it has no bearing on the standings.

Nomar Garciaparra managed the team last year in the Dodgers season finale.

Brad Ausmus said  “Joe came up to me when we were celebrating on the field last night and said, ‘You want to manage tomorrow night?’ I said, ‘I’ll be here,’ and he said, “All right, you’re managing.”

On Sunday , one Dodger poster jokingly posted in the Game Thread  “What a lousy lineup!  Fire the manager!”.

Ausmus was  assisted by “bench coach” Mark Loretta , “hitting coach” Jim Thome and “bullpen coach” Jeff Weaver who was kept busy with all the pitchers coming out of the pen.

Ausmus went to the mound to make a pitching change in the eighth to replace Ronald Belisario with Scott Elbert, then put himself in as a pinch runner for Thome in the bottom half after his hitting coach singled.

“I’m turning the reins right back over to Joe — if he ever shows up again,” Ausmus joked.  Ausmus is 1-0 as a manager!

On to the Postseason!!

I am super excited about tomorrow’s game at our beloved Dodger Stadium or as Vin Scully called it  when we started the season on a long winning streak at home,  “The Magic Castle.”

We are ready to rock that place!   Bring on the Cardinals!

I really think our two lefties Randy Wolf and Clayton Kershaw can take on the Cardinals.  Aside from Pujols, Cardinals don’t do well against lefties.

The Dodgers are coming off a  two game winning streak off the hot Rockies.  The Cardinals are coming with a three game losing streak.

I think our lefties can hold the Cardinal hitters from scoring if we can hold prince Albert to singles or walks. Same with Holliday.   Dodger hitters have done well against Waingwright.  Our hitters just need to soak in the Magic Castle to wake up those bats.

I expect that our dynamic duo of Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier will continue to have success and if Manny and Loney start hitting, watch out!

If we can win one at home and one at St Louis (I know the Dodgers record in St Louis) and bring it back to the Magic Castle, I think we can do it!

LET’S GO DODGERS!!!  LET’S GO!!

Hey Emma! Good luck to your guys against the Cards. Maybe it’ll be a Dodgers/Phillies rematch in the NLCS (but you know, of course, I’d be rooting for my Phillies). :-)

Hey Sue!
I would like nothing better than a rematch!

Very nice tradition of those cakes for the stadium employees and the fellow season tickets holders. (The cakes look delicious, btw.) I love Torre’s tradition of letting a player manage the last game. Whoever’s picked always seems to get a kick out of it. And now let the big games begin. Good luck against the Cardinals!

Jane!
I love the traditions too of the cakes and of Joe Torre giving the manager job to a vet. I really like Ausmus and I think he would make a good manager. Thanks for the good luck. Good luck to you too but I have a feeling you will not need it.
.
Jeff,
I will let the parking lot security people not to let Pujols or Carp in :-)

EMMA….love the Traditions. It is a good idea for fans (specially those attending just about every game – lucky them) to give thanks to the employees. They have great hearts. Also I love the Joe Torre tradition of letting a player manage the last game. Hey if we keep winning ahead of time then that tradition is possible. Ausmus did a great job. Where did you read the “Fire the Manager” comment?

Game 1 is on TONIGHT! I can not wait. I do hope our boys continue their winning streak. GOOOOO DODGERS….LET’S KEEP ON WINNING!

Rosie,
The “fire the manager” was done as a joke. I read it in the game thread from the Big Blue Wrecking Crew forum. The link is on the right side of the blog. I CAN’T WAIT either!! I wan to be on way already.
.
Peter,
LOL yeah, I’d like to turn those Cards over haha. Thanks! right back at ya, good luck except against us!

Hi Emma!
Yeah, I know the game’s at 3:07. I just got off the phone with my mom. She only lives like 7 minutes away from the stadium. I was planning going to her place early, having lunch (not sure if we’re going to eat lunch at DS or in J Town), but we will be there early and with bells on! Well, maybe not the bells, but we’ll be there! We’re not sitting in my mom’s usual season seats; we’ll be on the Reserved Level Aisle 43, Row D. I know where you sit, so I’ll try to come upstairs and say hi! Probably before the game, since I’m not going to feel like getting up during the game! :)

GO DODGERS!!!
GO WOLFY!!!

Oh, and Emma, I forgot to mention: Love that cake tradition! And yeah, Joe’s tradition of having a player be manager for the day! I think Brad Ausmus is going to be a GREAT manager someday! :)

Carol

Cpompe1,
I’ll try to go to the RS and see you. They are strict during postseason but they do let us go to RS. I am with you, I think Ausmus would make a GREAT manager someday! I can’t wait till game time!! See you Thursday!

Buz!
I love how Vin Scully called it “The Magic Castle!’
Let’s go Wolfie!
let’s go hitters!
Let’s go defense!
.
We fans want to sing “I LOVE L.A.” tonight!!

I was kinda thinking of coming up to the Top Deck when we come in. I think we would be able to use our Reserved Level tickets to get into the Top Deck, huh? They usually do. I don’t see why they wouldn’t. But the postseason is different, indeed. We’ll see. But we WILL see each other tomorrow; one way or another! See ya Thursday! Can’t wait!

Carol

Oh and Emma, I didn’t know that Matty Kemp had his own blog! I saw the link to the side of yours, so I went over there and left a comment! Thx for the link!

Carol,
you are so welcome! my friend LTD23 alerted me of that so I updated my blog to have the link! Got to keep track of our boys in Blue!

Thx Emma!
Well, I’m sure you’re busy; so am I! I’ve gotta go! Have fun tonight! And again…

GO DODGERS!!!
GO WOLFY!!!

Actually Carol, I just came back from my Pilates class so I am ready to close eveything here, grab lunch and I don’t know maybe go to Sturbacks and wait till the gates open at 4.p.m.

I am at the closest library (Chinatown) from the stadium waiting until the Dodgers open the stadium at 4: P.M.
Is almost time for those magical words from Vin Scully:
“Is time for Dodger Baseball!”
.
LET’S GO DODGERS! LET’S GO!!!!!

Great post Emma, who doesn’t love appreciation day? : ) I know I do!!! Nailed it, and I love the cake.

Emma: It’s cute how Torre still lets a player manage on the last day. I love Girardi, but sometimes I just miss Torre…
The history test went….okay. I got a 74. The teacher said the grades were better than he expected. Most people fail the first one because it is not what they expect. The hard part was at the end. There were 5 “Multiple multiple choice” questions. There were 5 choices, a, b, c, d, and e. For each question, there were either 2, 3, 4, or 5 right answers. And if you picked 3 but there were 4 right, you lost all credit. To my surprise, I actually got 2 of those 5 questions right! My average in that class is an 87. My overall average is a 94.5. I need a 95 GPA if I want to make principal’s list again. Whatever.
My Yankees won the first game of their ALDS 7-2! I’ll post something about that tomorrow. I hope people can comment on my posts. That’s weird about what you said. I didn’t edit it or anything.
Good luck to your Dodgers!! I’m pulling for them!
