Washington DC, The Dodgers and an Event I Attended.

Can you believe that the Dodgers record at Nationals Park is  1-4???   I still remember getting swept there last year.   Around that time, my two traveling friends and I were talking about going to Arizona where the team was heading next to get them out of their funk.   We steered the team in the right direction as the team started winning there  :-)

Dodgers lost in ugly fashion last night 5-4 but the loss was encouraging in that Billingsley pitched well taking a no hitter into the 6th inning until he had that costly hanging chad

that Zimmerman took into the Dodger bullpen.  The score was tied in the 9th inning and lost by James McDonnalds. JMac has struggled this year.  I don’t think he will be making the playoff roster.

The Dodger Giant Rivalry Event sponsored by the Baseball Reliquary

I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the event sponsored by the Baseball Reliquary. (did not know this organization existed!). It featured Arnold Hano representing the JINTs and Ross Porter representing the Dodgers. It was moderated by Jean Hastings Ardell.

Here is the not so good picture I took of Arnold Hano, Jean Ardell and Ross Porter

I got there a little early and was browsing the list of baseball books they had on display  I was telling my friend Erik that my friend Linda had said that “The Echoeing Green” was an excellent read when this man overheard me and said that he wa discussing the book with vin Scully. I was like “who is this man?” Later on I realized that it was the author Arnold Hano.

Mr. Hano is 87 years old and he along with Ross Porter took their turns talking about each team and poking fun at the other team. We were treated to stories of the old days and at the end took questions from a crowded audience. I regretted that I did not have any cash on me to buy Hano’s book “A day in the Bleachers.”. I took pictures of the exhibition and went home wanting to read Mr Hano’s book.   Here are two additional pics I took.  The rest did not come out too well.   .

I love what it says about Drysdale.  “Don Drysdale is in charge of all clubhouse pets such as dogs, cats, white mice and hamsters.  He was selected because he is very kind to animals and never hits them–only people (especially when they are in Giant uniforms).

Sounds like a very entertaining event, Emma. I love the quote about Drysdale! Very funny and very apropos!

It was! I am glad I discovered the Baseball Reliquary. I am planning on joining their organization and attending an event held at the Pasadena library this time.

Ross Porter. What a super man. I took my two sons to Dodger Stadium courtesy of Ross. He gave them a tour to the radio booth. They met Vin (big smiles on their faces) . They got to put on the headphones. It was a special day.. .all because Mr. Ross Porter was such an incredible person. He was Dodger Blue.

Re: ol trucks.. ;) I remember the very one you have – Orange 68 Chevy.. would that be a stepside .. or fleet.. long or short bed? chuckle.

Is it me or does Will Clark look like he’s in pain in that last picture there?

Buz,
Ross Porter is a class act. I miss him doing the broadcasting and doing Dodger Talk. Before asking a question, a guy said he misses him and we all applauded. Regarding my 68 truck, it is fleetside and short bed.
.
Jeff,
Did not noticed Will Clark. I was too busy looking at Sandy Koufax and the stadium in the background that looks the same now as it looked back in the 60’s.

Great post. Hopefully the dodgers can get that number down!!

Thanks 09Indians! Hey what teams are you rooting for in the playoffs? If my Dodgers are out, I still root for the National League.

Emma: Those Nationals are annoying. They took 2 out of 3 from my Yankees this year. In the Bronx. It was pretty embarrassing. Not the Yankee’s best times this year…..
Don Drysdale is an animal lover. Aw. Sounds like my kind of guy. Does Andre like animals?

Emma,
It has always been a mystery to me and other people as to how sometimes those teams that are struggling can take you to the woodshed and beat you by a huge margin.
But maybe it is the release of pressure from knowing you have to win, and just enjoying playing the game that makes it easier for those squads.
Or maybe it is the simple metal fact that with so much riding on the next 10 games, some teams lose a moment of focus and get blasted.
Not to mean anything bad, but even the best teams have a bad day or series. That is why we play 162 instead of 16 like in football.

Virginia,
Those Nats are like Gnats, annoying. Our beloved Drysdale passed away of a heart attack in 1993 in Montreal where he was broadcasting Dodger games. Vin Scully made the sad announcement. I think Andre does likes animals.
.
Rays,
And that is one of the reason why Baseball is a great game.
