Sandy into his windup….

Today September the 9th 2009 is the 44th universary of Sandy Koufax perfect game on September 9, 1965.  

“Two and two to Harvey Kuenn,  one strike away. Sandy into his windup, here’s the pitch: swung on and missed, a perfect game! On the scoreboard in right field it is 9:46 p.m. in the City of the Angels, Los Angeles, California, and a crowd of twenty-nine thousand one-hundred thirty nine just sitting in to see the only pitcher in baseball history to hurl four no-hit, no-run games.”    Vin Scully broadcasting the last inning of Sandy Koufax’s perfect game at Dodger Stadium on September 9, 1965:

Sandy Koufax throws a perfect game against the Chicago Cubs, 1-0, becoming the first major -league pitcher to throw four no-itters, surpassing the records held by Cy Young, bob Feller and Larry Corcoran.

In that game there was the possibility of a double no hitter as Bob Hendley was pitching the game of his life.  He said it was an honor to lose to Sandy.

The final batter of the game was Harvey Kuenn who struck out. Did you know that on May 11, 1963 Sandy Koufax threw his second no-hitter  and the final batter retired during that gem was also Harvey Kuenn?  Unluckly guy.    

Bob Hendley  allowed only one hit during the game which set up a record for least amount of hits during a nine inning game by both teams.

Sandy was absolutely one of my favorite players as a youngster. I recall walking into my best bud John’s house during the summers. His Pop would be fast asleep in front of the tv (if the Dodgers were on).. or lounging in the easy chair listening to… Who else? Vin Scully.

Happy 9/9/9 to you too, Emma. And happy anniversary to Koufax. Wow. So it was 44 years ago. He was some pitcher – a one in a million talent. He looked great the last time I saw him on TV (maybe at the HOF induction?). Still handsome and fit.

emma -Although Drysdale was my favorite, I was lucky enough to see Koufax pitch several times, once in the ’59 series. We’ll never see anything like them again.

for a while but a long time ago he was a pitching coach in the minors. Can you imagine? Unfortunately I never saw him pitch. Oh yeah, it must have sucked to face him. I read that one of those hitters in that game went back to the dugout saying something like “forget it man, you can’t hit him.”

Poor Harvey Kuenn! Wonder what the odds are of being the final out of not one, but two no-hitters by the same pitcher? That would make a good trivia question!

thanks! I love how Vin mentions the date and time in the broadcast. is wonderful that the nine inning was preserved for prosperity. You know that was around the time of the L.A. Riots.
